Fit Family April Fools Traditions

Here is one of our favorite April Fools Jokes "The Fake Daddy"
I snapped a picture of one of my kids early in the morning as he was discovering that what he thought was his daddy was only a news paper glued to card board held by a ruler and a pair of daddy;s stuffed pants.

In response the next year on April Fools day I walked into the living room and found a funny sight built by one of my 6 yr old twins.
I captured it in the picture above. We call it "The Fake Twins" I laughed until I cried.

I am sure you have seen this one before I posted it last year. April fools cupcakes. Colored mashed potatoes on top of meatloaf cupcakes. You can tell I am not very good at the whole cupcake decorating thing but the kids loved it. I am looking for new ideas for this year for dinner.

April Fools is one of our favorite holidays. It can not only be a fun time for tasteful tricks but a great day to make memories and traditions as a family. I try to keep it fun and not a time to dread. As a family we try to do tricks that don't hurt, embarrass or make a person look silly in front of others but my kids are small.

Kids Running Club and Car Caution

I got a large cardboard box. Like a refrigerator box and brought it and told them it was the same size as the front end of a truck. I had some of the kids turn around. While I took about 10 kids and had them hide behind the box. 

The other kids had to guess how many kids were behind there. They were surprised to see how many could fit. We talked about how the people in the car have difficulty seeing kids their size.

The theme for this lesson plan was "be seen". We showed kids which colors to wear and not to wear. We brought shirts for different kids to put on. I brought my head lamps and reflective gear. To show them what to wear at night. 

Honestly I am surprised at how many adults don't run with reflective gear. I have showed up to night or early morning runs where I am the only nerd who dares wear "the vest" or head lamp. But after running with the group for just a little while everyone starts wearing their reflective gear. 

It is just nice to know that cars have a way of seeing you even when you are trying to avoid them. I ran once with a woman who told me about when she was with someone that got hit by a car while running. Not a pretty story...I didn't tell the kids that one but is scared me enough to "Be Seen" while running.

Kids Run Club and Dogs

I got a lot of the material for this lesson from this link wikihow . We talked mostly about preventing a dog attack by watching for them and not taunting them but we added what to do in case of an attack. 

One thing thing that I added to the websites material was to watch for the whites of the dogs eyes. When they are up set or ready to attack their eyes get big and you can see the white. 

I also brought a dog and we practiced asking the owner (me) if we could pet them. Too many kids run up to dogs and suppose they are ok to pet just because the owner is there. It was kind of funny that during this lesson plan a stray dog came around wanting to play with the kids. 

They were able to put some things from this lesson into practice. The dog was wagging it's tail and its head was "low to the ground". They could easily identify those things and recognize that the dogs intentions were to play.

Kids Run Club Run Like a Spy

I wish I could pull some people at the gym off the treadmill and teach them what we taught these kids. I hear their feet slapping the belt and I cringe at the stress and strain that their calves and shins are enduring. It will be only a matter of time before they start to feel the pain of this. 

We taught the kids to run like spies. With their feet softly hitting the ground. The kids seemed to get this point. A spy needs to run quietly. We took turns with people turning around while another person tried to sneak up on them running. The kids loved it! We showed them the difference between the slap/elephant run and the spy run. When I yell "Run like a spy!" The kids know what I mean.

Kids Running Club Warm Up

The kiddos learned how to properly warm up. Most kids (and even many adults) will start running with a sprint without any kind of warm up. The purpose of the warm up is to get blood moving through the large muscle groups of the legs.

I brought two pieces of Laffy Taffy. One was frozen and one was warm. I asked them what would happen if I tried to bend the taffy. I then showed them. The frozen taffy snapped crisply in half. The warm taffy bent. We talked about how our muscles need to be warmed up or they can get hurt. I tried not to make it too literal. 

There are some parts of our bodies like ligaments and tendons that will snap or tear but mostly it is our muscles at a microscopic level that maybe damaged. The kids got the idea. And they remembered it. We also talked about not stretching before their muscles are warmed for the same reason.

Kids Run Club

Since this is a Fit "Family" website I thought it might be helpful to some of you ultra determined parents out there to share some of my ideas that I have had doing a kids running club.

A kids run club is a pretty cool thing. First of all, whatever sport your youngins are involved in they will benefit from running. It strengthens the lungs and heart and provides a great base for strength and agility. It has a stress relieving effect by releasing endorphin's and it is a great wiggle-getter-outer.

I started a neighborhood running club because there wasn't one available.

At each club we:
  • Review running logs
  • Discuss running safety
  • Do conditioning
  • Discuss a running principle
  • Practice a running principle
  • Cool down and stretch
  • Have a post-workout snack and review a nutrition principle
You may be able to just barley make out the schedule up above. I will try to get a better pic on soon and I have typed it out here below.

Spy Training Kids Run Club

Purpose: The club is a way for kids to learn and practice the basics of running with a fun spy theme twist. It also encourages kids to begin a lifelong love f running by  preparing them for and involving them in an early personal experience with a marathon.

Safety focus:
Warm up/cool down/shoes
Car caution
Be seen
Buddy power
Water wise
Car caution (again)

Skill Practice:
Spy Feet
Spy Running Form
Spy Planning/ When to go hard/easy
Spy Partner running
Mission impossible training. Long vs fast vs easy runs

New Meal Plan (Meal Plan 10)

I have a new meal plan but with some recipe repeats from other plans I've shared. I like how I did the dinner recipes in this one. I made them so that you can cut them out into your own recipe cards. Look it over if you want it in PDF form email me the address is on the side bar. I get two or three emails requests a day. I erase your email after I send it so you won't hear from me again. Also please don't feel bad if it takes me a few days to get to you, it is just little old me here by myself and I will get to you eventually :) Remember these are my family meal plans nothing professional use at your own risk. Kindly let me know if you find errors so I can correct them :)

If you don't have a family to feed it might be a good idea to stick to a single dinner meal plan that you like and just repeat that throughout the week. It would be much easier.

I do this type of meal plan so that I can eat a nutrient focused meal plan and still eat dinner with my family. If you have been following my posts you will know that I believe that family meals are a strong stabilizing force to any families success.

Family Meals help families bond and are proven to help children succeed in academics. They are also proven to help protect children from several risky behaviors.

The day meals are considered "clean" ingredients but one of the dinner meals (the chicken pot pie) has bread and condensed soup both of which are "no nos" to clean eaters but I believe it is healthy to have a little balance for my family...not much but a little.

In my opinion, for moms strengthening fitness, families and even faith can be done together not separately.

A fit mom (or at least one who is focusing on making herself more fit) will by default help her family become more fit.
